Mission Statement
Our mission is to enhance the educational, extracurricular, and working atmosphere by providing a safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing exterior environment for the Western Michigan University community. All of this is provided with an emphasis on responsible environmental and fiscal stewardship.
Landscape Services is a unit of WMU's Facilities Management division. We are responsible for the development, care and maintanance of the external, non-utility facilities of the University. The Landscape Services division members are dedicated to providing excellent service to support University events and activities. We believe that the campus grounds should reflect the quality of life, educational, and research missions of the University.
In honor of Earth Day, WMU Landscape Services recently had the opportunity to work with Peace Jam and St. Augustine Cathedral School to restore ecological health to WMU's campus woodlots and University-owned Kleinstuck Preserve. Please visit our Natural Areas page for more information and photos!
WMU Landscape Services has been named a Tree Campus USA for the fourth year in a row. Western Michigan University is one of only two schools in Michigan to receive this certification. See our Tree Campus USA page for more details. And check out our article in the Kalamazoo Gazette: Western Michigan University celebrates Arbor Day by planting swamp white oak.
WMU Landscape Services is proud to announce the completion of the Landscape Services Master Plan! Over the past months, our department has been working together to create a document which will guide future landscape planning and design. The Master Plan aims to identify specific recommendations for principles of land use, access, image, and environment and to provide direction to better maintain, preserve, and enhance University facilities. The plan puts a strong focus on increasing environmental stewardship and sustainability on campus.
