W. Michigan Pedestrian Mall Project

Site Design, Planning & Construction:
New Sangren Hall Project
There are many related construction and planning projects that must be done in conjunction with the construction project for the new Sangren Hall. These projects vary in size and type, and may occur before, during, or even after the Sangren Hall building construction, but all fall under the category of "site work".
Projects that are related to the site around the new building:
- Development of a pedestrian mall on the south side of the new building, which will connect with or expand the existing mall area to the west of the flag plaza and is consistent with the university's Master Plan for the central campus zone.
- New vehicle access routes for drop-off and parking on the north side of the new building.
- New and relocated utilities to serve the new building.
- Stormwater management infrastructure, including surface and underground detention structures.
- Walkways and landscaping around the perimeter of the new building.
Projects that must be accomplished prior to the start of construction:
- The existing Sangren Hall building will have all existing asbestos materials removed by an abatement contractor prior to demolition of the building. In the 1st phase of construction the south wing will be demolished to provide the space to construct the new Sangren Hall building. The north wing of the building will be demolished in Phase 2, after the new facility is completed.
- The Education Library, located on the 3rd floor of the south wing of the existing building, is being relocated to a temporary facility on the 1st floor of the north wing du ring construction of the new Sangren Hall.
An additional project is the expansion of the Schneider Hall chiller plant. The university has developed regional chiller plants on campus, each feeding multiple building to optimize efficiency of operation and maintenance. The chiller plant expansion will provide the additional capacity needed to supply chilled water to the new Sangren Hall facility, and to other adjacent buildings.
